And when it was said to them: "Live in this land and eat of its produce wheresoever you like, and ask for remission of your sins, but pass through the gates with submission (and not pride), We shall forgive your trespasses, and give to those who are righteous abundance,"

'Abdullāh Ibn 'Abbās / Muḥammad al-Fīrūzabādī

تفسير : (and when it was said unto them: dwell in this township) the town of jericho (and eat therefrom whence ye will) and whenever you will, (and say “repentance”) and say: there is no deity except allah; it is also said that this means: forgive our sins, (and enter the gate) the gate of jericho (prostrate; we shall forgive you your sins; we shall increase (reward) for the right doers) in their good works.

Jalāl al-Dīn al-Maḥallī

تفسير : and, mention, when it was said to them, ‘dwell in this city, the holy house [of jerusalem], and eat therein wherever you will, and say, ‘our concern is for [an], exoneration,’ and enter the gate, that is, the gate of the city, prostrating, a prostration that is [actually] a bow. we shall forgive (read naghfir, or the passive tughfar) you your transgressions; we shall give more to those who are virtuous, through obedience, in terms of reward.
