٩ - ٱلتَّوْبَة

9 - At-Tawba

اِنَّ اللہَ اشْتَرٰي مِنَ الْمُؤْمِنِيْنَ اَنْفُسَھُمْ وَاَمْوَالَھُمْ بِاَنَّ لَھُمُ الْجَنَّۃَ۝۰ۭ يُقَاتِلُوْنَ فِيْ سَبِيْلِ اللہِ فَيَقْتُلُوْنَ وَ يُقْتَلُوْنَ۝۰ۣ وَعْدًا عَلَيْہِ حَقًّا فِي التَّوْرٰىۃِ وَالْاِنْجِيْلِ وَالْقُرْاٰنِ۝۰ۭ وَمَنْ اَوْفٰى بِعَہْدِہٖ مِنَ اللہِ فَاسْـتَبْشِرُوْا بِبَيْعِكُمُ الَّذِيْ بَايَعْتُمْ بِہٖ۝۰ۭ وَذٰلِكَ ھُوَالْفَوْزُ الْعَظِيْمُ۝۱۱۱
Inna Allaha ishtara mina almumineena anfusahum waamwalahum bianna lahumu aljannata yuqatiloona fee sabeeli Allahi fayaqtuloona wayuqtaloona waAAdan AAalayhi haqqan fee alttawrati waalinjeeli waalqurani waman awfa biAAahdihi mina Allahi faistabshiroo bibayAAikumu allathee bayaAAtum bihi wathalika huwa alfawzu alAAatheemu

Ahmed Ali

God has verily bought the souls and possessions of the faithful in exchange for a promise of Paradise. They fight in the cause of God, and kill and are killed. This is a promise incumbent on Him, as in the Torah, so the Gospel and the Qur'an. And who is more true to his promise than God? So rejoice at the bargain you have made with Him; for this will be triumph supreme.

'Abdullāh Ibn 'Abbās / Muḥammad al-Fīrūzabādī

تفسير : (lo! allah hath bought from the believers) who are sincere (their lives and their wealth because the garden will be theirs) in exchange for the garden (they shall fight in the way of allah) in obedience of allah (and shall slay) the enemy (and be slain) by the enemy. (it is a promise) from allah (which is binding on him) that he must fulfil (in the torah and the gospel and the qur'an. who fulfilleth his covenant better than allah? rejoice then in your bargain that ye have made) with allah, i.e. the garden, (for that is the supreme triumph) the abounding safety.

Jalāl al-Dīn al-Maḥallī

تفسير : indeed god has purchased from the believers their lives and their possessions, that they expend it in obedience of him — for example by striving in his way — so that theirs will be [the reward of] paradise: they shall fight in the way of god and they shall kill and be killed (this sentence is independent and constitutes an explication of the [above-mentioned] ‘purchase’; a variant reading has the passive verb come first [sc. fa-yuqtalūna wa-yaqtulūn, ‘they shall be killed and shall kill’], meaning that some of them are killed while those who remain, fight on); that is a promise which is binding (both [wa‘dan, ‘promise’, and haqqan, ‘binding’] are verbal nouns, and are in the accusative on account of their omitted [implicit] verbs) upon him in the torah and the gospel and the qur’ān; and who fulfils his covenant better than god?, that is, no one is better in fulfilling it. rejoice then (there is a shift from the third [to second] person here) in this bargain of yours which you have made, for that, bargain, is the supreme triumph, the one that secures the ultimate goal.

تفسير : (lo! allah hath bought from the believers their lives and their wealth because the garden will be theirs…) [9:111]. muhammad ibn ka‘b al-qurazi said: “when the helpers — seventy in number — swore allegiance to the messenger of allah, allah bless him and give him peace, at al-‘aqabah in mecca, ‘abd allah ibn rawahah said: ‘o messenger of allah, stipulate anything you wish with regard to your lord and to yourself’. he said: ‘as for my lord, i stipulate that you worship him and not associate anything with him; and i stipulate for myself that you defend me from that which you would defend yourselves’. they said: ‘what do we get if we were to do this?’ he said: ‘the garden!’ they exclaimed: ‘this is a prosperous transaction; we will not revoke it nor will we resign it’. and so this verse was revealed”.

Sahl al-Tustari

تفسير : indeed god has purchased from the believers their selves and their possessions, so that theirs will be [the reward of] paradise…that is, he has purchased [one’s] self from the desires of this world and from all that distracts it from remembrance of him, so that one’s self and wealth may become solely devoted to him. and how can anyone who has not sold his ephemeral life and fleeting desires to god, live with god, exalted is he? moreover how can he live a good life?then he said:god has purchased from the believers their selves… notwithstanding the fact that there is no good in them, and he gave them in exchange that which is entirely good, even though all that is within the two realms of existence belongs to him. truly this is out of his utmost graciousness(luṭf) and generosity (karam) to his believing servants.mālik b. dīnār has related that he passed by a palace under construction and asked the workers about their wages. each one replied by telling him how much his wage was except for one of them. so he asked him, ‘what is your wage?’ he replied, ‘i don’t have a wage.’ he asked, ‘and why is that?’ and he replied, ‘it is because i am the servant of the owner of the palace.’ then mālik ⸢cried out and⸣ said, ‘o my lord! how generous you are! all humanity are your servants, yet you have assigned them work to do and promised them a reward for it.’his words:
