Then We appointed you leaders in the land after them to see how you behaved.

'Abdullāh Ibn 'Abbās / Muḥammad al-Fīrūzabādī
تفسير : (then we appointed you) o community of muhammad (pbuh) (vicegerents) successors (in the earth after them) after their destruction, (that we might see how ye behave) what you will do of goodness.
Jalāl al-Dīn al-Maḥallī
تفسير : then we made you, o people of mecca, successors (khalā’if is the plural of khalīfa) in the earth after them, that we might behold how you would behave, in it, and whether you would take heed from their example and believe in our messengers.
