12 - Yusuf

قَالُوْا تَاللہِ لَقَدْ عَلِمْتُمْ مَّا جِئْنَا لِنُفْسِدَ فِي الْاَرْضِ وَمَا كُنَّا سٰرِقِيْنَ۝۷۳
Qaloo taAllahi laqad AAalimtum ma jina linufsida fee alardi wama kunna sariqeena

They said: "We swear by God. You know we did not come to commit any crime in the land, nor are we thieves."

Tafseer

'Abdullāh Ibn 'Abbās / Muḥammad al-Fīrūzabādī

تفسير : (they said: by allah, well ye know) o people of egypt (we came not to do evil in the land) the land of egypt by stealing or harming people, (and are no thieves) we have not taken what you are looking for.

Jalāl al-Dīn al-Maḥallī

تفسير : they said, ‘by god,’ (ta’llāhi is an oath, entailing astonishment) ‘you know very well that we did not come to work corruption in the land, and we are certainly not thieves’, that is, we have never stolen [anything].
