God has promised to make those of you who believe and do the right, leaders in the land, as He had made those before them, and will establish their faith which He has chosen for them and change their fear into security. They will worship Me and not associate any one with Me. But those who disbelieve after this will be reprobates.

Tafseer

'Abdullāh Ibn 'Abbās / Muḥammad al-Fīrūzabādī

تفسير : (allah hath promised such of you) o companions of muhammad (pbuh) (as believe and do good works) between themselves and their lord (that he will surely make them to succeed (the present rulers) in the earth (to succeed others)) some of them in succession to others (even as he caused those who were before them) among the children of israel: joshua ben nun, caleb ben jephunneh; it is also said that this means: we shall make them dwell in the land of mecca as we made those before them, among the children of israel, dwell in their land after the destruction of their enemy; (and that he will surely establish for them) he will make triumph (their religion which he hath approved for them) and has chosen for them, (and will give them in exchange) of mecca (safety) following the destruction of their enemy (after their fear) of the enemy. (they serve me) in order that they worship me in mecca. (they ascribe no thing) no idol (as partner unto me. those who disbelieve henceforth) after victory and change of fortune, (they are the miscreants) the disobedient.

Jalāl al-Dīn al-Maḥallī

تفسير : god has promised those of you who believe and perform righteous deeds that he will surely make them successors in the earth, in place of the disbelievers, just as he made those, children of israel, who were before them successors, in place of the [ruling] tyrants ([the verb may be] read as active istakhlafa, ‘he made [them] successors’, or as passive istukhlifa, ‘were made successors’) and he will surely establish for them their religion which he has approved for them, namely, [the religion of] islam, by making it prevail over all religions and enrich them throughout the land, so that they become masters thereof, and that he will give them in exchange (read wa-la-yubdilannahum or wa-la-yubaddilannahum) after their fear, of disbelievers, security. and god fulfilled his promise to them in the way mentioned, and he praises them with his words: ‘they worship me, without associating anything with me’ (ya‘budūnanī lā yushrikūna bī shay’an is an [independent] new sentence, standing as a justification [for his promise]). and whoever is ungrateful after that, bestowal of grace, from among them, [whoever is ungrateful] for it, those, they are the immoral. the first to show ingratitude for that [grace of god] were the murderers of ‘uthmān [b. ‘affān], may god be pleased with him, and they began to kill one another [henceforth] after having been brothers.

Ali ibn Ahmad al-Wahidi

تفسير : (allah hath promised such of you as believe and do good work…) [24:55]. al-rabi' ibn anas related that abu'l-'aliyah said regarding this verse: “the messenger of allah, allah bless him and give him peace, and his companions remained in mecca, after the advent of the revelation, for ten years in a state of fear: sleeping at night and waking in the morning with weapons at their sides. then the prophet was commanded to migrate to medina. one of his companions asked him: 'o messenger of allah, there is not a single day in which we feel safe such that we can put down our weapons'. the messenger of allah, allah bless him and give him peace, said: 'it will not be long before one of you will be sitting unarmed amidst huge numbers of people, none of whom carries a weapon'. then, allah, exalted is he, revealed (allah hath promised such of you as believe and do good work…) up to the end of the verse. consequently, allah, exalted is he, enabled his prophet, allah bless him and give him peace, to have the upper hand over the arabian peninsula, and the muslims were able to put down their weapons and feel safe. they remained safe after allah, exalted is he, took to himself his prophet, and during the reign of abu bakr, 'umar and 'uthman, may allah be well pleased with them. when they fell into that which they fell and were ungrateful, allah brought fear into their hearts; they changed and so allah, exalted is he, changed what they had”. isma'il ibn al-hasan ibn muhammad ibn al-husayn al-naqib informed us> his grandfather> 'abd allah ibn muhammad ibn al-hasan al-nasrabadhi> ahmad ibn sa'id al-darimi> 'ali ibn al-husayn ibn waqid> his father> al-rabi' ibn anas> abu'l-'aliyah>> ubayy ibn ka'b who said: “when the messenger of allah, allah bless him and give him peace, and his companions migrated to medina and the helpers sheltered them, all the arabs united to destroy them, such that they were forced to sleep with their weapon and wake up with their weapons. some said: 'do you think we will live to see the day when we go to sleep fearing no one but allah, glorified and majestic is he?' [as a response] allah, exalted is he, revealed (allah hath promised such of you as believe and do good work) up to his words (those who disbelieve henceforth, they are the miscreants) i.e. those who are ungrateful for [allah's] bounties”. this was narrated by al-hakim abu 'abd allah in his sahih from muhammad ibn salih ibn hani'> abu sa'id ibn shadhan> al-darimi.
