There are happy tidings for those who keep away from the worship of false gods and turn to God in repentance. Give glad tidings to My creatures.

'Abdullāh Ibn 'Abbās / Muḥammad al-Fīrūzabādī
تفسير : (and those who put away false gods lest they should worship them) and those who shun the worship of the devil and idols (and turn to allah in repentance) with faith and all other kinds of acts of obedience, (for them there are glad tidings) of the garden at the moment of their death and also they will have glad tidings of the honour that allah will bestow upon them at the gate of paradise. (therefore give good tidings (o muhammad) to my bondmen
Jalāl al-Dīn al-Maḥallī
تفسير : as for those who steer clear of the worship of false deities, graven images, and turn penitently, apply themselves, to god, there are good tidings for them, of paradise. so give [such] good tidings to my servants,
Ali ibn Ahmad al-Wahidi
تفسير : (and those who put away false gods lest they should worship them…) [39:17].
ibn zayd said: “this verse was revealed about three people who confessed the oneness of allah in the pre-islamic period: zayd ibn ‘amr, abu dharr al-ghifari and salman al-farisi”.
(… for them there are glad tidings. therefor give good tidings (o muhammad) to my bondmen who hear advice and follow the best thereof…) [39:17-18].
‘ata’ reported that ibn ‘abbas said: “when abu bakr al-siddiq believed in the prophet, allah bless him and give him peace, and followed him, ‘uthman, ‘abd al-rahman ibn ‘awf, talhah, al-zubayr, sa‘id ibn zayd, sa‘d ibn abi waqqas went to him and asked him [whether he believed in the prophet]. he informed them about his faith and they believed [with him on the spot]. allah revealed about them (therefor give good tidings (o muhammad) to my bondmen who hear advice) i.e. from abu bakr (and follow the best thereof)”.
Sahl al-Tustari
تفسير : those who steer clear of [the worship of] false deities…he said:evil (ṭāghūt) is the world, its root is ignorance (jahl), its branch is what is eaten and drunk, its adornment is hubris (tafākhur), its fruits are transgressions (maʿāṣī) and [in] its scales [of recompense] (mīzān) are severity (qaswa) and punishment (ʿuqūba). his words:
