وَاِذْ غَدَوْتَ مِنْ اَھْلِكَ تُبَوِّئُ الْمُؤْمِنِيْنَ مَقَاعِدَ لِلْقِتَالِ۝۰ۭ وَاللہُ سَمِيْعٌ عَلِيْمٌ۝۱۲۱ۙ
Waith ghadawta min ahlika tubawwio almumineena maqaAAida lilqitali waAllahu sameeAAun AAaleemun

Remember when you set forth in the morning from your house assigning the faithful positions for the battle, God heard everything and knew all.

Tafseer

'Abdullāh Ibn 'Abbās / Muḥammad al-Fīrūzabādī

تفسير : (and remember when thou settedst forth at daybreak from thy housefolk) when you left medina for uhud (to assign to the believers their positions for the battle) against their enemies, (allah was hearer) of your speech, (knower) of what befell you and of your leaving the positions which were assigned to you.

Jalāl al-Dīn al-Maḥallī

تفسير : and, mention o muhammad (s), when you went forth at dawn from your family, at medina, to assign the believers, to have [them] occupy, their places, stations for them to stand at, for battle, and god hears, what you say, knows, your circumstances: this was the day of [the battle of] uhud. the prophet (s) set out with 1000 or 950 men, while the idolaters numbered 3000. the prophet pitched camp at the ravine on saturday 7th of shawwāl in year 3 of the hijra. he had his back and that of his troops to uhud. he arranged their lines and placed a group of archers under the command of ‘abd allāh b. jubayr at the foot of the mountain and said to them: ‘defend us with your arrows in case they come up from behind us, and remain here whether we are being defeated or on the verge of victory’.

تفسير : (and when thou settedst forth at daybreak from thy housefolk…) [3:121]. this was revealed about the battle of uhud. sa'id ibn muhammad al-zahid informed us> abu 'ali al-faqih> abu'l-qasim al-baghawi> yahya ibn 'abd al-hamid al-hammani> 'abd allah ibn ja'far al-makhrami> ibn 'awn> al-miswar ibn makhramah who said: “i said to 'abd al-rahman ibn 'awf: 'uncle, tell me about what happened to you at uhud?' he said: 'read the first one hundred and twenty verses of al 'imran you will find your answer: (and when thou settedst forth at daybreak from thy housefolk) up to his saying (then, after grief, he sent down security for you…) [3:154]' ”.
