Tafseer

'Abdullāh Ibn 'Abbās / Muḥammad al-Fīrūzabādī

تفسير : (say) to them, o muhammad: (i am no new thing among the messengers (of allah)) i am not the first human being to be sent as messenger, there were many messengers before me, (nor know i what will be done with me or with you) in relation to hardship, comfort and well-being; it is also said that this verse was revealed about some of the companions of the prophet (pbuh) who asked him about when to leave mecca in order to escape from the persecution of the disbelievers. so the prophet (pbuh) said: “i do not know what will be done with me or with you; nor whether we should migrate from mecca or not”. (i do but follow) act upon (that which is inspired in me) that which i am commanded in the qur'an, (and i am but a plain warner) a warning messenger who addresses you in a language that you understand.

Jalāl al-Dīn al-Maḥallī

تفسير : say: ‘i am not a novelty, unprecedented, among the messengers, that is to say, [i am not] the first to be sent [by god as his messenger]. already many of them have come before me, so how can you deny me? nor do i know what will be done with me or with you, in this world: will i be made to leave my [native] land, or will i be slain as was done with [some] prophets before me, or will you stone me to death, or will the earth be made to swallow you as [it did] deniers before you? i only follow what is revealed to me, that is, the qur’ān, and i do not invent anything myself. and i am only a plain warner’, one whose warning is plain.

Ali ibn Ahmad al-Wahidi

تفسير : (…nor know i what will be done with me or with you…) [46:9]. al-kalbi reported from abu salih that ibn ‘abbas said: “when tribulations faced by the companions of the prophet, allah bless him and give him peace, intensified, the prophet saw in his dream that he migrated to a land that had palms, trees and plenty of water. he related this dream to his companions and the latter took it for a good omen and a harbinger of relief from the harm of the idolaters which they faced. after a while, when they saw that nothing had happened, they said: ‘o messenger of allah! when are you going to migrate to the land which you saw in your dream?’ the messenger of allah, allah bless him and give him peace, did not answer them, but allah, exalted is he, revealed (…nor know i what will be done with me or with you…), i.e. i do not know whether or not i am going to move to the place which i saw in my dream. i follow only that which is revealed to me”.

Sahl al-Tustari

تفسير : say, ‘i am nothing new among god’s messengers…’he said:that is, ‘there were messengers before me who commanded what i command [you] and forbadewhat i forbid [you]. i am not peculiar (ʿajab) among the messengers. i do not call you to anything except the profession of god’s oneness (tawḥīd), and i do not guide you to anything other than the noblest of ethics (makārim al-akhlāq). it was with this that the prophets before me were sent.’his words, exalted is he:
