٧٥ - ٱلْقِيَامَة

75 - Al-Qiyama

وَالْتَفَّتِ السَّاقُ بِالسَّاقِ۝۲۹ۙ
Wailtaffati alssaqu bialssaqi

Tafseer

'Abdullāh Ibn 'Abbās / Muḥammad al-Fīrūzabādī

تفسير : (and agony is heaped on agony) and severity is heaped upon severity: the severity of the last day of the life of the world and that of the first day of the hereafter; and it is also said this means: and the dead person's legs are twisted around each other;

Jalāl al-Dīn al-Maḥallī

تفسير : and the shank is intertwined with the [other] shank, that is, one of his shanks [will be intertwined] with his other shank at the moment of death; or [it means] the distress of parting with this world is intertwined with the distress of the arrival of the hereafter;

Sahl al-Tustari

تفسير : and [his] legs are joined together,he is speaking of the affairs of this world and the hereafter. it has also been said that they are your legs when they joined together in your shroud. it has been related of jacob <img border="0" src="images/alyhialsalam.jpg" width="34" height="19"> that when the [angel] bearing good tidings came to him, he [the angel] said, ‘i have not been given permission to bring to you what i have come with, without saying: “may god make the pangs of death easy for you to bear”’. it was said to aswad b. yazīd when he was dying, ‘be of good cheer, for forgiveness is your lot.’ he replied, ‘but what about the shame [that we shall feel] before the one from whom forgiveness comes?’it has been related that when abū bakr al-Ṣiddīq <img border="0" src="images/radeyallahanhom.jpg" width="24" height="22"> was dying, he was visited by ʿĀʾisha ã and she cited the following verse:by your life, wealth does not enrich oneon that day when [the soul] reaches the throat and the breast is constricted [in death]. then he uncovered his face and said, ‘that is not so [in my case], but the words for me are, and the agony of death arrives with the truth [50:19]. look to those two [old] garments of mine, ⸢wash them⸣ and enshroud me in them, for the living have greater need for new clothes than the dead.’ his words, exalted is he:
