7 - Al-A'raf

قُلْ اِنَّمَا حَرَّمَ رَبِّيَ الْفَوَاحِشَ مَا ظَہَرَ مِنْہَا وَمَا بَطَنَ وَالْاِثْمَ وَالْبَغْيَ بِغَيْرِ الْحَقِّ وَاَنْ تُشْرِكُوْا بِاللہِ مَا لَمْ يُنَزِّلْ بِہٖ سُلْطٰنًا وَّاَنْ تَقُوْلُوْا عَلَي اللہِ مَا لَا تَعْلَمُوْنَ۝۳۳
Qul innama harrama rabbiya alfawahisha ma thahara minha wama batana waalithma waalbaghya bighayri alhaqqi waan tushrikoo biAllahi ma lam yunazzil bihi sultanan waan taqooloo AAala Allahi ma la taAAlamoona

Tell them: "My Lord has forbidden repugnant acts, whether open or disguised, sin and unjust oppression, associating others with God, of which He has sent down no authority, and saying things of God of which you have no knowledge."

Tafseer

'Abdullāh Ibn 'Abbās / Muḥammad al-Fīrūzabādī

تفسير : (say) to them, o muhammad: (my lord forbids only indecencies) adultery, (such of them as are apparent) open adultery (and such as are within) taking secret lovers, (and sin) intoxicants as the poet said: i sipped sin until my mind erred, thus indeed does sin take away minds. i openly drank urns of sin, and between us benefiting, you see your goddess; (and wrongful oppression) unlawful overbearingness, (and that you associate with allah that for which no warrant) no scripture or proof (hath been revealed, and that ye tell concerning allah that which ye know not) of forbidding crops and cattle, good things and raiment.

Jalāl al-Dīn al-Maḥallī

تفسير : say: ‘my lord forbids only indecencies, grave sins, such as fornication, such of them as are apparent and such as are hidden, that is, the overt ones and the secret ones, and sin, the act of disobedience, and wrongful insolence, against people, namely, oppression, and that you associate with god that for which he never revealed any warrant, any definitive proof for such association, and that you say concerning god that which you do not know’, in the way of forbidding what he has not forbidden and other things.

Sahl al-Tustari

تفسير : say: my lord only forbids indecent acts, such of them as are apparent and such as are hidden…he [sahl] said:this refers to the envy (ḥasad) of a person’s heart and the actions of his bodily members. if he were to give up the management (tadbīr) of both he would be one of the ‘mainstays’ (awtād) of the earth. however, the servant is between two states: either he is managing with his heart that which is not his concern, or he is acting through his bodily members upon that which is not his concern. no one is saved from either of these two except through the protection (ʿiṣma) of god, exalted is he. the source of life for hearts is certainty, and their darkness is brought on through [their own] devising and management (tadbīr).he [abū bakr] said, ‘we were with sahl at sunset, and he said to aḥmad b. sālim, leave off managingthings, so that we may pray the ʿĪshāʾ prayer in mecca. his words, exalted is he: …and [forbids] that you say concerning god that which you do not know.whoever speaks about god without permission, in a way which lacks reverence (ḥurma) or without maintaining the due propriety (adab), has rent the veil (satr). indeed, god, exalted is he, has forbidden anyone to say anything about him of which he has no knowledge.his words, exalted is he:
