Motala is a small but quite old city and the seat of Motala Municipality, situated in Östergötland County, Sweden. It is the third largest city of Östergötland County after Linköping and Norrköping. It is situated along the famous Swedish Lake Vättern and is often included among Sweden's most scenic cities. The total population of Motala City is approximately 31,000, whereas the population of Motala Municipality is more than 45,000. Motala got the status of a city in 1881 CE, whereas it was officially founded in 1823 CE. The first longwave radio transmission station of Sweden was established in this City in 1927, which remained functional till 1963. The famous food packaging brand "Tetra Pak" established its first "Tetra Brik" packaging machine in this city in 1963.
The presence of Islam in this scenic city of Sweden is relatively smaller compared to other parts of the Country. Just like the entire country of Sweden, Islam reached this city in the early 1990, through migration and settlement of Muslims, mostly from the Middle East and Africa. Before that, some immigrants from South Asia had already settled here for better living standards and in search of good jobs. While it is almost impossible to know the exact number of Muslims living here, their number is estimated to be somewhere between 1,500 and 2,000. This small Muslim community of Motala includes immigrants from Bosnia, Syria, Iraq, Somalia, Afghanistan, Turkey, and Pakistan who settled here through migration, employment, and refugee resettlement. Currently, this multicultural Muslim community actively participates in Motala's social, educational, and economic life, with a visible effort to maintain their religious identity.

The services provided by these Mosques and Islamic Centers include arrangements for regular daily prayers, special congregational Jumma (Friday) Prayer, and Eid Prayers. On the social and cultural side, these Mosques also play a key role by facilitating family gatherings for social activities. These Mosques also provide facilities for celebrating Islamic festivals and events.

There are no historical monuments in or around Motala, reflecting the presence of Islamic culture and heritage. The reason is that Islam reached this city in the recent past, a few decades ago. Just like other cities and Municipalities of Sweden, Islamic culture is largely represented by the local Muslim Community of Motala. Almost the entire religious and cultural activities of Muslims living in this City revolve around the local Islamic Cultural Centers and Mosques. Islamic culture and heritage are also reflected in the cultural events, often hosted by these Centers, where families and children participate in the dresses, which are a sweet combination of Islamic values, cultural traits of their origin, and somewhat influenced by the local Swedish styles.
Apart from the organized cultural events, Islamic culture is also reflected in the individual activities of the local Muslim Community, especially through their lifestyle and eating habits. Routine clothing patterns, especially women's attire, are largely influenced by their cultural origin as well as by the Islamic norms and traditions; hijab being a glaring example. The Islamic culture in this part of Sweden is also kept alive and preserved through the Islamic marriage ceremonies, where people, especially women and children, come in their relevant cultural dresses, while following the Islamic values.
Islamic culture and heritage are also represented during the month of Ramadan and on the occasion of Eid festivals. Ramadan marks the month-long fasting, which is a mandatory Islamic act of worship. During this month, the Muslim community of Motala observes fasting. The cultural habits are also reflected in the Iftar meals, specially arranged in the local Mosque and Cultural Center, which is attended by a good number of Muslims, along with their families.
Overall, the Muslim community of Motala is maintaining its religious identity through the cultural and social activities, while adhering to the Islamic norms and parameters.
Islamic community services and organizations in Motala are quite vibrant in their activities. There are a couple of such Islamic organizations working in this small city, where the Muslim population is less than 2,000. Despite being in numbers, these community service organizations are working hard to serve the local Muslim community in almost every walk of life.
Motala Multicultural Center, known as “Motala Multikulturella Center" in the local language, is one such organization. It serves the community as the main Islamic center and Mosque for this city. They regularly manage five daily prayers in the Mosque. Apart from it, they also arrange Jumma (Friday) Prayer, as well as Quran learning sessions. During Ramadan, they organize special Iftar meals for the Community to break the fast collectively. They also promote interfaith relationships across the followers of different religions.
Another very active community service organization is the Bosnian Islamic Association (Bosnisk Islamiska Församlingen), which was originally established to support the Bosnian Muslims settled here after migrating from Bosnia, as refugees. However, they have gradually expanded their scope of operations and now serve the entire community, regardless of origin. It organizes religious, cultural, and social gatherings to keep the community well-connected with the local multicultural society.
The Muslim community living in Motala celebrates the major Islamic festivals and events, such as fasting in the month of Ramadan, and the two Eids, with religious commitment and enthusiasm. Although they are few in number, they have kept these special religious occasions alive through systematic efforts by local Mosques and Cultural Centers, such as the Motala Multicultural Center and the Bosnian Islamic Association. The religious and cultural activities of the local Muslim Community largely revolve around these two organizations. However, many Muslims also prefer to celebrate these events and festivals on their own, with their families and friends.
The most significant Islamic event is the fasting month of Ramadan. The Islamic Centers arrange special Taraweeh prayers in their Mosques, which are attended by many local Muslims. Additionally, they arrange special Iftar dinners for Muslims to break the fast collectively. While many Muslims attend these dinners, many others prefer to do it individually with their families.
The real festive occasions for Muslims are the two Eids, Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha. Eid al-Fitr is celebrated after the completion of the fasting month of Ramadan. The Muslim Community in Motala particularly celebrates this festive occasion with their families and friends, starting with a congregational Eid Prayer, which is arranged by the local Mosques and is attended by quite a good number of Muslims, including women and children. Then the families gather at a convenient place to celebrate Eid in their respective cultural traditions while maintaining Islamic traditions.
The other Eid, known as Eid al-Fitr, is celebrated with fewer participants. The main religious ritual of this Eid is to slaughter sacrificial animals, which cannot be performed here in Sweden in its true spirit. The reason is quite obvious; the Swedish authorities do not allow slaughtering of animals at the individual level; hence, Muslims have to take the assistance of Islamic Centers for this mandatory ritual. Due to this restriction, Eid al-Adha is sometimes not vibrantly visible in this small city. However, the special Eid prayer is attended by many Muslims, even though it is not a public holiday in Sweden.
Here in Motala, quite a few restaurants offer Halal foods for the local Muslim Community, whereas some of them are certified and authentic Halal restaurants. Such restaurants are mostly operated by immigrants from the Middle Eastern Countries. However, a few others are also operated by South Asian settlers. As a general precaution, most tour planners strongly recommend getting a confirmation from the staff of the restaurant about the authenticity of the provision of Halal foods before ordering your meals.
La Beirut Restaurang, as is also evident from its name, is a Lebanese restaurant. It offers Halal-certified food, in a purely Lebanese style, including grilled meats and traditional Lebanese dishes. But be careful because they also serve alcohol and wines, and other non-permissible foods for their non-Muslim customers. So, do check and confirm before placing your order.
