Manchester is a lively city with a vibrant history. Known for its rich industrial heritage, its residents come from various origins and beliefs. Muslims have long been a part of British history, going back several centuries to the Middle Ages, being visitors, immigrants, and locals alike. Their population has grown even more significantly in recent years to 13% (2021) in Greater Manchester alone. Their places of worship stand as community centers and are home to several religious activities focusing on building earnest relations between its Muslim members and other communities of Manchester. With frequent open days, they invite members of other faiths to explore more about Islam. Here’s a list of some of the most famous mosques in Manchester so you don’t miss the chance to catch your obligatory rak’as with the congregation at appointed prayer times or optional ones if you decide to just visit:
Manchester Central Mosque, also known as Victoria Park Mosque or Jamia Mosque, has been a landmark for Muslims in Manchester. It is situated in the middle of Victoria Park, Manchester. Two adjacent houses were brought and turned into a purpose-built mosque in 1971. The old houses were demolished, and in their place took form what we now know as MCM. Decorated with distinct Islamic designs and a Minar to signify its identity, the Mosque prides itself on its community service and continuous redevelopment to meet the growing needs of forwarding times.
The most distinct aspect of Didsbury Central Mosque is its unique building. What used to be a chapel now stands as a mosque and an Islamic Centre. The building is a fascinating blend of the history of two religions. Also known as the Manchester Islamic Centre, Didsbury Central Mosque is located in a building that was originally the “Albert Park Methodist Chapel.” The chapel closed in 1962, and by 1967, it was bought by a few members of the Syrian Arab community to be used for the Muslim population of Manchester as a mosque and community center. The Mosque has access to radio coverage to most of South Manchester and broadcasts Adhan (call to prayer) at prayer times, as well as Friday sermons, Islamic reminders, and such. With the help of a volunteering group, the Mosque maintains a paradise-themed garden on Burton Road while also establishing well-kept facilities and social activities for the youth.
Like many sites in Manchester, Al-Furqan is a converted red brick factory that now caters to Muslim worshippers. It is a humble location, signifying the strong presence of the Muslim Community in Manchester. It houses a dedicated foundation of the Muslim community, working to educate and empower their fellow religious members. It’s an accessible location if you’re in a hurry for your prayers while in the locality.
NMJM is the largest Mosque, with a capacity to facilitate about 3000 worshippers at once, in Manchester. Bright interiors, an open glass exterior, and a radiant gold dome mark the Mosque. The Jame masjid is a popular site for prayers among Muslims in the area. Praised by the locals and visitors for being spacious and well-maintained, the North Manchester Jame Masjid is more than a mosque. It offers Islamic education to youth and adults and also has outreach programs for non-Muslims to educate them about Islam and Muslims. Don’t miss the chance to stand with the congregation for the Friday prayers at this Mosque! If you’re in the locality, do visit and check out the place; the patrons and caretakers will never turn you away.
Adjacent to a busy main road connecting to the city center, Madina Masjid is an accessible, recently redeveloped space holding large congregation prayers for Friday. It is known for its community services for the young and old alike. Open 24 hours, its volunteers are available to help the elderly, setting an exemplary community practice. It provides a sanctuary to all Muslims, young and old, residing in Manchester. Away from the commotion of the city, it is a calm and quiet place to pray.
Located at a humble corner by one of the streets of an immensely hectic city center, the Muslim Youth Foundation (MYF) acts as a refuge, a peaceful haven from all the city noise. Visitors and worshippers complement its humble atmosphere and cleanliness. It also has a dynamic foundation for the Muslim youth, organizing educational conferences and holding inspiring events to keep the community connected. The Mosque keeps the local prayer times in Manchester updated through its website.
These are a few among the several mosques scattered across Manchester where you can perform your prayers on time with the congregation or simply visit to connect with the local Muslim community.
