Islam is the fastest-growing religion in the United Kingdom, and a large population of Muslims live in the city of Birmingham. Many glorious mosques and Islamic community centres in Birmingham facilitate the religious and social activities of the Muslim communities in the city. The prevalence of these mosques also demonstrates the Muslim community's unity and the state's policy of inclusion and equal rights. During prayer times in Birmingham, these mosques are filled with eager worshippers comprising men, women, young adults, and children. The Birmingham Central Mosque (BCM) is among the UK's most well-recognized religious buildings. Opened to the public in 1975, it was the largest mosque in Western Europe. The mosque is open to visitors all year round and serves as a national symbol for Islamic advocacy; it has been featured in two BBC documentaries. Since its inception, the Birmingham Central Mosque has served as a unifying institute for the Birmingham Muslim community.
Non-Muslims have also used the mosque to host different events, including lectures, meetings, and studies. The main hall can accommodate 2,500 worshippers, and the adjacent Ladies Gallery can hold 300 worshippers; extensions are underway to accommodate more visitors. Besides providing educational services at their Madrasah, the Birmingham Central Mosque offers various services, such as family support, marriage bureau and divorce settlements, funeral services, food bank, Quran reciting circle (for men), ladies' circle, and Islam embracing services.
Birmingham Jami Masjid and Islamic Centre was established in 1973 and has grown significantly since its inception due to the support and devotion of the Bangladeshi Muslim community. Along with religious services, Jami Masjid has always served the community during challenging times. Jami Masjid offers various Islamic educational programs, such as the Raheem Academy, which provides standard Islamic education for Muslim boys and girls between the ages of five and 16.
Another program is the Darul Uloom Islamic High School and College, which offers Hifz and Alimiya programs and routine education. Jami Masjid also hosts classes for Muslims and non-Muslims to learn about Islam, the Arabic language, and other issues of interest. Services offered by the masjid include Islamic funerals, civil and Islamic marriages, and embracing Islam services. Services provided during Ramadan include Tarawih prayer, daily summary of the Quran, pre-iftar discussions, and lectures on Tafsir and Fiqh.
Masjid Hamza, known initially as Woodstock Road Masjid, has served Birmingham's Muslim community for over three decades. The origins of the masjid date back to the 1960s when Indian sub-continent Muslims settled in the UK. Known to be among the first mosques in Birmingham, Masjid Hamza encouraged Muslims to offer daily prayers in congregation and established Muslim individuality in Birmingham. In the early 1970s, Masjid Hamza started an after-school and weekend madrassa to educate the community about Islamic teachings.
Currently, the masjid also offers weekly educational services, such as Quran and Tajweed classes in English and Urdu for men and women. In 1998, the Masjid Hamza began an extension project to provide new services to the community; the project is still ongoing, and the new facilities benefit the community. Besides educational services, Masjid Hamza is devoted to helping the Muslim community. Its Day Centre serves as a meeting place for the elderly community. The function hall can accommodate 250 people and is used for weddings, Aqeeqa, and other events. Moreover, the Majid provides bereavement counselling and funeral arrangements.
Green Lane Masjid and Community Centre is run by Jamiat Ahl-e-Hadith, UK. The centre aims to inspire and serve the Muslim and non-Muslim communities and educate them about Islam. It is located in a historic building acquired in 1979. The masjid has undergone extensive renovation and expansion over the past few years to accommodate residencies, increase space for prayer, and add a mortuary facility.
Regarding educational services, the Green Lane Academy of Sacred Sciences (GLASS) is an initiative of the Green Lane Masjid that offers to enhance knowledge about the Quran and the Arabic language. The academy also established a Sisters Tarbiyah Department 10 years ago, which provides Islamic knowledge to women. In addition, there are online and on-site Madrassa classes. Apart from religious and educational programs, the Green Lane Masjid provides various services to the community, including domestic violence support and counselling, youth activities and sports clubs, elders lunch, cancer support, Zakat distribution, and a food bank that provides non-perishable food items and toiletries to those in need.
Al-Hijrah Masjid is a member of the Muslim Council of Britain (MCB) and the Union of Muslim Organizations (UMO). It aims to connect Muslims from different backgrounds, ethnicities, and sects. In addition, the masjid regularly organizes interfaith dialogue with representation from all major faiths and strongly advocates religious tolerance. Al-Hijrah Masjid is dedicated to producing young entrepreneurs who embody the true beliefs of Islam and recognize what a true Muslim is all about.
The masjid hosts a madrassa and Quran academy to fulfil their purpose. There are various educational programs for women, including Arabic, Tafsir, Tajweed classes, and much more. In addition, the masjid's youth circle provides exciting educational and recreational activities for children and young adults. Community services offered by Al-Hijrah Masjid include banquet halls, funeral services, Nikah, and a Shariah Council.
