Tafseer

'Abdullāh Ibn 'Abbās / Muḥammad al-Fīrūzabādī

تفسير : (lo! those who say: our lord is allah) they professed allah's divine oneness, (and afterward are upright) in faith and do not revert to disbelief; it is also said this means: those who are upright in performing the five daily prayers and do not play tricks, (the angels descend upon them) when their spirits are taken away, (saying: fear not) the chastisement which is ahead (nor grieve) about what you have left behind, (but bear good tidings of the paradise which ye are promised) in the life of the world.

Jalāl al-Dīn al-Maḥallī

تفسير : truly those who say, ‘our lord is god!’ and then remain upright, [adhering] to the affirmation of [god’s] oneness and to whatever else has been enjoined on them, the angels descend upon them, at the point of death, [saying to them], ‘do not fear, death and what will come after it, nor grieve, for any family or children that you have left behind, for we will look after them after you, and rejoice in the good tidings of the paradise which you were promised.

Ali ibn Ahmad al-Wahidi

تفسير : (lo! those who say: our lord is allah, and afterward are upright, the angels descend upon them…) [41:30]. ‘ata’ reported that ibn ‘abbas said: “this verse was revealed about abu bakr al-siddiq, may allah be well pleased with him. the idolaters had said: ‘allah is our lord and the angels are his daughters; they will intercede with him for us. this is why they were not upright’. the jews said: ‘allah is our lord and ezra is his son. muhammad is not a prophet’. this is why they were not upright. abu bakr, may allah be well pleased with him said: ‘allah is our lord, alone without partners and muhammad, allah bless him and give him peace, is his slave and messenger’. this is why he was upright”.

Sahl al-Tustari

تفسير : truly, those who say, ‘our lord is god.’ and then remain on the straight path...he said:that is, they do not associate partners along with him. this is as in the saying narrated from the prophet , ‘they are my nation and, by the lord of the kaʿba, they remained on the straight path and did not commit association (shirk) like the jews and the christians.’ ʿumar said, ‘they did not evade [the truth] with the evasiveness of foxes’. his words: …the angels descend to them and say, ‘do not fear nor grieve...’that is, at the time of death. indeed, the prophet said, ‘god, exalted is he, says: “i have never hesitated over anything as much as i have hesitated over snatching (qabḍ) the soul (rūḥ) of the believer”’, by which he means, ‘the angels never hesitate over anything as much as they hesitate over snatching the soul of my believing servant, which they do while giving him good tidings (bashāra) and treating him with honour (karāma) saying, “do not fear for your souls and do not grieve about the day of gathering”’, just as he has said, the supreme terror shall not grieve them [21:103].he said:[he is] the one who takes you all into his care (al-mutawallī li-jumlatikum) with [his] good pleasure (riḍā), protecting your hearts, and delighting your eyes with the [divine] manifestation (tajallī), in reward for your profession of his oneness and as a favour (tafaḍḍul) from your lord.his words:
