Ar-Ra’uf Meaning & Definition

Allah سُبْحَٰنَهُۥ وَتَعَٰلَىٰ is Ar-Rauf (in Arabic: ٱلْرَّؤُفُ), which means He is extremely compassionate and with the greatest amount of empathy. Ar-Ra’uf came from the Arabic root ra-hamza-fa (ر أ ف) which has a traditional meaning of kindness, gentleness, mercy, and warmth. This name is understood to represent the highest mercy and compassion showing the quality of Ar-Rahim at an extreme. Allah سُبْحَٰنَهُۥ وَتَعَٰلَىٰ is Ar-Ra’uf, as He is compassionate to even sinners who ask for forgiveness.

One way of showing His mercy is that He stops His believers from their wrongdoings and saves them from facing the bad consequences in the life hereafter. He may put His worshipper in hardness, but there is always hidden mercy and kindness in that hardness, and He will reward his people. The characteristics of Ar-Ra’uf came from “Ra’fa,” which is the ultimate limit of “Rahma.” The distinction is that Ra'fa appears before a disaster, but Allah's Rahma (mercy) appears after. Ra’fa is a form of mercy that doesn’t come with any sort of hardships or difficulties.

This name of Allah سُبْحَٰنَهُۥ وَتَعَٰلَىٰ is mentioned in the Quran 11 times which signifies the importance it holds. In the Quran Allah سُبْحَٰنَهُۥ وَتَعَٰلَىٰ says:

"And [there is a share for] those who came after them, saying, 'Our Lord, forgive us and our brothers who preceded us in faith and put not in our hearts [any] resentment toward those who have believed. Our Lord, indeed You are Kind and Merciful.'"— (Qur'an 59:10)

In this verse, Allah سُبْحَٰنَهُۥ وَتَعَٰلَىٰ uses both Ra’uf and Rahim, which shows both his mercy and compassion that He eases people’s hardships and also saves them from any hardship that is about to come. He says:

"It is He who sends down upon His Servant [Muhammad] verses of clear evidence that He may bring you out from darknesses into the light. And indeed, Allah is to you Kind and Merciful."— (Qur'an 57:9)
