٢٤ - ٱلنُّور

24 - An-Nour

اِنَّ الَّذِيْنَ جَاۗءُوْ بِالْاِفْكِ عُصْبَۃٌ مِّنْكُمْ۝۰ۭ لَا تَحْسَبُوْہُ شَرًّا لَّكُمْ۝۰ۭ بَلْ ہُوَخَيْرٌ لَّكُمْ۝۰ۭ لِكُلِّ امْرِئٍ مِّنْہُمْ مَّا اكْتَسَبَ مِنَ الْاِثْمِ۝۰ۚ وَالَّذِيْ تَوَلّٰى كِبْرَہٗ مِنْہُمْ لَہٗ عَذَابٌ عَظِيْمٌ۝۱۱
Inna allatheena jaoo bialifki AAusbatun minkum la tahsaboohu sharran lakum bal huwa khayrun lakum likulli imriin minhum ma iktasaba mina alithmi waallathee tawalla kibrahu minhum lahu AAathabun AAatheemun

Ahmed Ali

Those who spread lies were a clique among you. Do not think that it was bad for you: In fact it has been good for you. Each of them will pay for the sin he has committed, and he who had greater share (of guilt) will suffer grievous punishment.

لَوْلَاۗ اِذْ سَمِعْتُمُوْہُ ظَنَّ الْمُؤْمِنُوْنَ وَالْمُؤْمِنٰتُ بِاَنْفُسِہِمْ خَيْرًا۝۰ۙ وَّقَالُوْا ھٰذَاۗ اِفْكٌ مُّبِيْنٌ۝۱۲
Lawla ith samiAAtumoohu thanna almuminoona waalmuminatu bianfusihim khayran waqaloo hatha ifkun mubeenun

Ahmed Ali

Why did the faithful men and women not think well of their people when they heard this, and said: "This is a clear lie?"

لَوْلَا جَاۗءُوْ عَلَيْہِ بِاَرْبَعَۃِ شُہَدَاۗءَ۝۰ۚ فَاِذْ لَمْ يَاْتُوْا بِالشُّہَدَاۗءِ فَاُولٰۗىِٕكَ عِنْدَ اللہِ ہُمُ الْكٰذِبُوْنَ۝۱۳
Lawla jaoo AAalayhi biarbaAAati shuhadaa faith lam yatoo bialshshuhadai faolaika AAinda Allahi humu alkathiboona

Why did they not bring four witnesses (in support of their charge)? And since they did not bring the four witnesses they are themselves liars in the sight of God.

وَلَوْلَا فَضْلُ اللہِ عَلَيْكُمْ وَرَحْمَتُہٗ فِي الدُّنْيَا وَالْاٰخِرَۃِ لَمَسَّكُمْ فِيْ مَاۗ اَفَضْتُمْ فِيْہِ عَذَابٌ عَظِيْمٌ۝۱۴ۚۖ
Walawla fadlu Allahi AAalaykum warahmatuhu fee alddunya waalakhirati lamassakum fee ma afadtum feehi AAathabun AAatheemun

Ahmed Ali

Were it not for the grace of God and His mercy upon you in this world and the next, you would have suffered a great affliction for the false accusation.

14

اِذْ تَلَقَّوْنَہٗ بِاَلْسِنَتِكُمْ وَتَــقُوْلُوْنَ بِاَفْوَاہِكُمْ مَّا لَيْسَ لَكُمْ بِہٖ عِلْمٌ وَّتَحْسَبُوْنَہٗ ہَيِّنًا۝۰ۤۖ وَّہُوَعِنْدَ اللہِ عَظِيْمٌ۝۱۵
Ith talaqqawnahu bialsinatikum wataqooloona biafwahikum ma laysa lakum bihi AAilmun watahsaboonahu hayyinan wahuwa AAinda Allahi AAatheemun

When you talked about it and said what you did not know, and took it lightly -- though in the sight of God it was serious --

15

وَلَوْلَاۗ اِذْ سَمِعْتُمُوْہُ قُلْتُمْ مَّا يَكُوْنُ لَنَاۗ اَنْ نَّتَكَلَّمَ بِھٰذَا۝۰ۤۖ سُبْحٰنَكَ ھٰذَا بُہْتَانٌ عَظِيْمٌ۝۱۶
Walawla ith samiAAtumoohu qultum ma yakoonu lana an natakallama bihatha subhanaka hatha buhtanun AAatheemun

Ahmed Ali

Why did you not say when you heard it: "It is not for us to speak of it? God preserve us, it is a great calumny!"

16

يَعِظُكُمُ اللہُ اَنْ تَعُوْدُوْا لِمِثْلِہٖۗ اَبَدًا اِنْ كُنْتُمْ ￁مِنِيْنَ۝۱۷ۚ
YaAAithukumu Allahu an taAAoodoo limithlihi abadan in kuntum mumineena

God counsels you not to do a thing like this, if you are believers.

17

وَيُبَيِّنُ اللہُ لَكُمُ الْاٰيٰتِ۝۰ۭ وَاللہُ عَلِيْمٌ حَكِيْمٌ۝۱۸
Wayubayyinu Allahu lakumu alayati waAllahu AAaleemun hakeemun

Ahmed Ali

God explains His commands to you clearly, for God is all-knowing and all-wise.

18

اِنَّ الَّذِيْنَ يُحِبُّوْنَ اَنْ تَشِيْعَ الْفَاحِشَۃُ فِي الَّذِيْنَ اٰمَنُوْا لَہُمْ عَذَابٌ اَلِيْمٌ۝۰ۙ فِي الدُّنْيَا وَالْاٰخِرَۃِ۝۰ۭ وَاللہُ يَعْلَمُ وَاَنْتُمْ لَا تَعْلَمُوْنَ۝۱۹
Inna allatheena yuhibboona an tasheeAAa alfahishatu fee allatheena amanoo lahum AAathabun aleemun fee alddunya waalakhirati waAllahu yaAAlamu waantum la taAAlamoona

Ahmed Ali

There is painful punishment in this world and the next for those who like that immorality should spread among the believers, for God knows and you do not know.

19

وَلَوْلَا فَضْلُ اللہِ عَلَيْكُمْ وَرَحْمَتُہٗ وَاَنَّ اللہَ رَءُوْفٌ رَّحِيْمٌ۝۲۰ۧ
Walawla fadlu Allahi AAalaykum warahmatuhu waanna Allaha raoofun raheemun

English

Ahmed Ali

But for the grace of God and His mercy (much harm would have been done); yet God is compassionate and kind.
