Looking to pray your daily prayers in the congregation? Here's a list of mosques with their prayer times in Multan. Multan is a historical city that goes far back to the 3000 BCE era. According to a Persian historian named Firishta, Multan was a settlement founded by the grandson of Prophet Noah. The region has several archeological sites from the Early Harappan period of the Indus Valley civilization from 3000 BCE until 2800 BCE. Islam first arrived with the conquest of Khalifa Ali bin Abi Talib in 44 Hijri (664 A.D.).
Starting from the 8th-century conquest of Sindh by Muhammad Bin Qasim, Islam started to spread throughout the subcontinent. Multan has several ancient and archaeological sites that are must-visit. There are also a few historical mosques that transport the observer back several hundred years. These are some recommendations compiled by us that you must visit, with some neighborhood mosques to catch your congregational prayers.
Shahi Eid Gah was a mosque commissioned by Nawab Abdul Samad Khan, the Mughal governor of Multan, in the early 18th century. Mughal Muhammad Shah was the reigning Emperor at that time. The mosque's interior is decorated with intricate mosaics, with its exterior embellished with glazed blue Multan-style tiles. There are seven domes symmetrically arranged in a long row, measuring 76 x 16 meters. There's an enormous courtyard, functioning as a popular site for Eid congregational prayers. Adjacent to the tomb of 20th-century Sufi Ahmad Saeed Kazmi, it is a popular location for local tourists.
Quite famous in Multan, Sawi Masjid is more of a gravesite dating back to the 16th century. It is a unique roofless structure. A few unmarked graves are located by the walls. It is unknown who the occupants are, except for one grave named Safar Quli 999 AH (June 1591 CE). It is the only building of its kind, a classic example of Multani art and Tughluq architecture. It showcases the historicity of Multan, with several influences from all parts of Asia. Sawi, translated as "Green," has a structure that has an ornamental wall enclosing the gravesite, with elements of mosque architecture (such as a west-facing mihrab) added to allow for on-site worship. The intricately decorated wall bears Quranic inscriptions and Persian couplets, indicating that the grave likely belongs to a person of prominence or wealth.
Laal Jamia Masjid is the oldest accessible mosque situated in Saddar Bazar, Multan Cantt. In the center of the city's most frequented market, the mosque is the most frequented, with nearby shopkeepers and business owners gathering for congregational prayers. The mosque's main prayer hall has a capacity for 360 worshippers, with a big courtyard that can accommodate approximately 1200 worshippers. There are two rows of veranda on either side, and a few rooms at the back side are used as accommodations for religious groups traveling from other cities. It also has a library that is still under construction.
The most captivating feature of Gol Masjid is its structure: built like a circle. Pakistan seems to have quite a few such mosques constructed on a circular plan. "Gol" in Urdu means circle, hence the name of the mosque. The mosque has unique Multani-style ornamentations with tiny point domes, and a single minaret embellished similarly. In some aspects, it also reminds the observer of the Mughal architecture of some regions.
Located west of a busy avenue of Bosan Road, Jalal Masjid is a well-liked mosque in the vicinity. It is well-maintained under the authority of the local government and has the capacity for mass congregational prayers on Friday. It is a humble neighborhood mosque frequented by regular worshippers and liked among the locals for its clean facilities. It also has a park behind it and is surrounded by many local food stalls and a variety of other refreshments.
Bhutta Masjid Wapda Town is located along the busy highway of Northern Bypass. It is an accessible mosque for those traveling through the region, as well as a popular Jamia (congregational mosque) in the town. It has a well-maintained facility, with an air-conditioned main prayer hall, and provides respite to tired travelers. The architecture is a mixture of Arab and Persian mosque designs. The worshippers find its tranquil environment spiritually healing for themselves.
In several traditions and narrations, we see how much importance Prophet Muhammad ﷺ gave to standing in congregation in prayers. It was narrated that the Prophet (ﷺ) said: "Prayer in congregation is twenty-five levels better than a prayer offered on one's own." [Grade: Sahih (Darussalam). Keep this beloved tradition of congregational prayers alive by making sure to attend congregational prayers being held in nearby mosques.
