99% of the population in the Islamic Republic of Pakistan identifies as Muslim, and the city of Faisalabad in Pakistan is no exception. Faisalabad is located in Punjab, with the Chenab and the Ravi River on either side. It is the third largest city in Pakistan with regard to population, and it is world-famous for its textile industry. The quality of fabric produced in Faisalabad is unmatched and used by brands all over the world. The city was known as Lyallpur under British rule; it was one of the planned cities where a British colony was established under Sir James Broadwood Lyall. Given the potential of the land, it soon began to convert into an industrial metropolis.
Today, Faisalabad has everything from textiles to dairy to crops. Faislabad City, Faisalabad Saddar, Chak Jhumra, Jaranwala, Samundri, and Tandlianwala are the biggest divisions of Faislabad. The people of Faisalabad are traced back to forest-dwelling tribes from Jhang and Sandalbar to as far as Toba Tek Singh. These tribes settled in Faislabad and became involved in herding buffalos, land cultivation, and textiles. Like the rest of the country, the citizens of Faisalabad are predominantly Muslim with a proud Punjabi heritage. Mosques are a common site in Faisalabad, and you would find one at every corner of the city.
Since praying in congregation is the preferred act in Islam, you will see many men going towards the mosques at prayer times in Faisalabad. In Faisalabad, you will not find many mosques that allow women's prayers. The culture demands that women pray at home while the men go to the mosque for daily prayers. Besides the five daily prayers, Muslims in Faisalabad gather in mosques to perform Jummah (Friday), Tarawih (in Ramadan), and Eid prayers. In addition, the mosques frequently organize Islamic lectures to educate men, women, and children about the principles of Islam and the teachings of the Quran and the Prophet.
Here's an overview of some well-known mosques in Faisalabad and how they cater to its community's religious and social needs.
Zainab Masjid is located in the residential area of People's Colony, Faisalabad. It is a beautiful and expansive mosque that welcomes Muslims to practice their faith peacefully. Dawat-e-Islami, a well-known Islamic foundation in Pakistan, runs the mosque. Besides organizing the five-time congregational prayers and the weekly Jummah prayers, Zainab Masjid also has a hostel that accommodates people who want to become Hafiz-e-Quran. Although there isn't much information available on its website, there are many pictures of the mosque and testimonials praising its grandeur, atmosphere, and Imam.
The UET Faislabad Grand Mosque is inside the University of Engineering and Technology (UET) Faisalabad. It is the central mosque of the campus and is well-known for its grand architecture and interior featuring beautiful calligraphy. The mosque was completed in 2017 and has a huge dome and large lawns. The mosque also serves as a community center for the students and faculty of UET to engage in religious conversations. Islamic lectures and seminars are also held in the mosque.
Masjid Faizan-e-Madina is one of the main Madani Marakiz of the religious organization Dawat-e-Islami. It is a beautiful, large mosque that spreads Islamic knowledge to hundreds of children daily. Besides offering congregational prayers, children learn about the Holy Quran and the fundamentals of Islam. The teachers and management at Masjid Faizan-e-Madina are incredibly cooperative and humble. Many renowned and learned scholars of Islam visit the mosque for Islamic seminars and to give religious lectures. Moreover, the mosque is the centre for various religious occasions, such as Eid Milad-un-Nabi and Ijtamai Qurbani on Eid-ul-Azha.
Markazi Sunni Rizvi Jamia Masjid is the largest mosque in Faisalabad, with characteristically tall minarets that can be seen from a considerable distance. Situated amid Jhang Bazar, this spacious mosque is also known as Masjid Maulana Sardar because the shrine of Sufi Saint Maulana Sardar Sahib is located beside it. The daily five-time congregational prayers are conducted on the lower level of the mosque, which is accessible via the side door. Jummah prayers are accompanied by a short lecture by the Ulama on different Islamic topics every week. The Jummah prayer is performed in the mosque's main hall, with arrangements for women on the lower level. Accommodation for women for the five daily prayers is also available.
Punjab is the land of Sufis, Sufia, or Mystics, who preached about Islam in a way that dwelled on spirituality rather than the orthodox Islamic methodology. Their message of humanity over religious division, equality, living life in the pursuit of true meaning, and oneness with Allah Azzawajal struck a chord with the locals who mostly belonged to Hindu and Sikh religions in the 8th century. Through a series of "silsila" of Sufia, the region gradually converted to Islam until 99% of the population was Muslim.
The most notable Sufi Shrines in Faislaabd are the Sabri Darbar Nishatabad, Faisalabad, associated with the 13th-century Sufi saint Alauddin Sabir Kaliyari, the pupil of Baba Fariduddin Masud Ganjshakar. Baba Qaim Sain is also a popular saint in Faisalabad. Muslims of the area often visit the shrine of Baba Qaim Sain to pay their homage and ask Allah to grant their duas on behalf of his beloved person, the saint Qaim Sain. Faisalabad, often called the Manchester of Pakistan, is a culturally rich and religiously devout city. Apart from the famous mosques and shrines listed above, you can also enjoy the delicious regional food, get some shopping done on the cheap, and visit beautiful sites like the clock tower.
