One of the earliest mosques in Tianjin, the Jinjiayo mosque, was built with the development of water transport in the Sancha River area during one of Tianjin's most prosperous periods. The locals believe it to be a great testament to the decade-long friendship between the Han and the Hui people.
According to the tablets recovered from the mosque, the mosque was built in 1574 during the Ming dynasty and was funded by the money gained from the water transport of grain to the Muslims of Anhui. Some Muslim members of the community contributed towards the establishment of a classroom, shower room, and Mochizuki in the mosque. Reconstruction work, however had to be done due to damage by the weather. The main hall was also expanded from 150 square meters to 209 square meters.

The mosque is also widely known for its beautiful yet unique architecture that is traditionally Chinese.
