Prayer Times in Guangzhou

Guangzhou, once called Canton or Kwangchow, is the capital and largest city of Guangdong province in southern China. Guangzhou has a 2200-year-old history, and it is recognized in the history books for its role in the maritime silk route. The silk route brought Arab and Persian traders to China, allegedly including a companion of the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), Sa'd ibn Abi Waqqas (رَضِيَ ٱللَّٰهُ عَنْهُ). Despite a very famous tomb attributed to the companion in the Guihuagang district of Guangzhou, the accuracy of Sa'd ibn Abi Waqqas' (رَضِيَ ٱللَّٰهُ عَنْهُ) arrival in China is not proven with certainty. Irrespective of the accuracy of this claim, much is certain that Muslim traders from Arab and Persia brought Islam to China in the 6th century, and Guangzhou was the first Chinese city to come into contact with Islam. Today, Guangzhou is home to a flourishing Muslim community. Here, we will discuss notable mosques, halal food places, Islamic centers, and landmarks in Guangzhou city, China.

Popular Mosques in Guangzhou

Mosques are essential in the lives of Muslims all around the world. They are the main places of worship in Islam, places where people perform their daily prayers according to the teachings of Islam. While providing a place for worship, these mosques also promote fraternity and brotherhood in the local Muslim community. There are three formal mosques in Guangzhou. Let's read more about these mosques below:

Guangzhou Huaisheng Mosque

Guangzhou Huaisheng Mosque, also called the Huaisheng Mosque or Guangta Mosque, is the oldest mosque in China and one of the oldest in the world. It was constructed in the Tang Dynasty, and after 1300 years, it still stands. The name, Huaisheng, roughly translates to "in memory of the sage (prophet)" and is said to have been built by Sa'd ibn Abi Waqqas' (رَضِيَ ٱللَّٰهُ عَنْهُ) as a tribute to the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ). The architecture of the mosque is unique and quite beautiful. It is a classic combination of the Chinese and Arabic styles, creating an exquisite blend of both cultures. The 'Tower of Light,' the 36-meter-tall Guangta Minaret of the mosque, is its most popular feature and one of the few remnants of Islamic architecture in China. The minaret served as a lighthouse, guiding ships on the maritime silk route.

The mosque has an area of 3,600 square meters, of which the constructed part is 1,553 square meters. The rest of the area comprises the courtyard. The mosque has a main prayer hall where the congregation of daily prayers and weekly jummah prayers takes place. The female prayer area is separate. The female prayer hall is on the second floor, while the men's prayer hall is on the ground floor. Arabic calligraphy can be seen on the pillars and walls of the mosque.

The mosque contains

  • A prayer hall
  • East and West galleries
  • Scripture storage room
  • A small courtyard.

The main prayer hall is in the center of the courtyard. Inside the prayer hall, the decoration is very simple, and the floor is covered by prayer mats. The mosque serves as a vital place for the Muslims in Guangzhou.
