Islamic Culture and Heritage in China

Islam has been a part of Chinese heritage since history and has been practiced in the region since the 7th century CE. Even today, there are around 17 to 25 million people in Chinese that practice Islam. Some of the country's provinces have a Muslim-majority population. The majority of the Muslims in the country reside in Xinjiang, which is an autonomous region. Xinjiang is home to the Uyghurs. Other regions that are home to the Muslim population in China include Ningxia, Gansu, and Qinghai.

Chinese Muslims believe Islam first came to China during the rule of the Tangs in 616 to 618 and thrived in the region to the Song dynasty where Muslims were highly active in the import and export businesses. It is also reported that the emperor of the Song dynasty had invited Muslims to establish a buffer zone between the Song and Liao dynasties and settle down in the region. Even during the rule of the Yuan dynasty, Mongols had imported Central Asian Muslims to serve in administrative roles in China – making the Muslim population in the region grow. Muslims also maintained a strong presence in the region during the Ming Dynasty and Qing dynasty where they have been reported to be part of government circles and close to governmental figures.

Due to a significant Muslim population, halal food is relatively easier to find in China, especially in large cities. In major cities such as Beijing or Shanghai, small Islamic restaurants and stalls can be found. These are usually run by Uyghurs and sell delicious noodle soup. Halal food is called "pure truth food" or 清真菜. Beef and lamb slaughtered the halal way can also be found in public markets in Northern China rather easily. However, if you want to eat some delicious halal food in restaurants with a good ambiance and equally good food – below are some options in Shenzhen you can consider.
