In Islam, Muslims must offer salah five times a day. It is even better if the salah is offered in jama'ah (congregation). Abu Sa'id Al-Khudri narrated that the Prophet (ﷺ) said, "The prayer in congregation is twenty-five times superior to the prayer offered by person alone." (Sahih al-Bukhari Vol. 1, Book 11, Hadith 619). Mosques make it possible to offer salat in congregation. They are a central place where Muslims in close vicinity gather five times a day to offer their prayers with jama'ah. Each mosque establishes an iqamah time, so Muslims who want to offer their prayers with the congregation can come to the mosque at the specified time and offer their salat behind the imam, and with their fellow Muslims.
Mosques also serve as educational institutions that teach you the Quran and its meaning, help you memorize it, and arrange lectures to help you increase your religious knowledge. Niigata has only one purpose-built mosque that serves as a central place for the Muslims to offer their five obligatory prayers, Jumu'ah prayers, Taraweeh, and Eid prayers. It is a complete mosque providing all the facilities from Salah to Islamic activities under one roof.
An-Nur Mosque Niigata is managed by the Muslim Student Association in Niigata, also called the An-Nur group. This mosque was formed for students by the group, which was established by a Bangladeshi Muslim student in 1995. The mosque started from a rented room. Later, in 2006, an Egyptian student, along with other students, with the help of fundraising and donations, established An-Nur Mosque from the ground up. The founders wanted to build a purpose-built mosque from scratch rather than renovate an existing building. They wanted the mosque to be designed like one and provide all the facilities, a mosque should to worshippers.
Today, the An-Nur Mosque is a well-built mosque with spacious prayer halls for men and women, dedicated ablution areas, restrooms, and multi-purpose rooms. The first floor is dedicated to women, while the second floor is the men's area. The third floor is reserved for cultural and Islamic activities. The mosque also offers Arabic classes, Quran classes, lectures, and other activities. Cooking and sewing classes are also provided to the sisters to help them earn a livelihood and make them independent.

The new Islamic year starts with the 1st Muharram, followed by the 9th and 10th Muharram, called Ashura when the Muslim community observes the volunteer fast. In the 9th month, Muslims across the globe celebrate Ramadan, which is a holy month. Muslims observe fasts for the entire month and abstain from eating and drinking from dawn till dusk. The sighting of the Shawaal's moon marks the end of Ramadan, and the Eid celebrations begin. It starts with giving Zakat-ul-Fitr, which is charity, followed by the Eid prayer, which is held in Masjid An-Nur. Later, everyone meets and greets each other, visits each other places, and enjoys the feast with family and friends.
Similarly, Muslims celebrate Eid-ul-Adha in the last month of the Islamic calendar. The celebrations begin with the Eid prayer, after which Muslims sacrifice their animals following the Abrahamic tradition and distribute the meat among family, friends, and the needy. Niigata does not have many certified Islamic butcher shops; thus, many Muslims choose to do their animal sacrifice in their home countries.
