Kun Faya Kun – Understanding the Meaning

Kun faya koon refers to the power of Allah. When Allah wants something to exist, He doesn't have to work hard like humans. Instead, he just says, 'Kun,' and it happens. In Surah Al-Baqarah, Allah says:

"He is the Originator of the heavens and the earth! When He decrees a matter, He simply tells it, "Be!" And it is!" (Al-Baqarah 117).

The term defines the sovereignty and supreme authority of Allah over everything. Kun Faya Kun reflects in it that Allah is Al-Malik, Al-Qayyum, Al-Aziz, Al-Mutakabbir, Al-Khaliq, Al-Baari, Al-Azeem, Al-Kabeer, and Maalik-ul-Mulk. In Surah Al-Imran, Allah says:

"Say, O Prophet, 'O Allah! Lord, over all dominions! You give whom it pleases You the kingdom, and You take away the power from whosoever You will; You exalt whom You please and debase whom You will. All goodness is Yours (entirely). Indeed, You have the power over all things." (Al-Imran 26).

Allah Azzwajal is explaining His own power in this verse – showing human beings that Allah is all-powerful. He is the Creator of the heavens and the earth, and all living things will return to Him. An important thing to understand here is that Allah says, Be, and it happens does not necessarily mean that it materializes immediately. Allah has a doctrine of a specific process for everything – the creation of a human being, the rising and setting of the sun, the formation of rocks, the changing of weather, and everything that happens in the universe. Thus, when He says, Kun! The process of that thing which He commands begins immediately, but the materialization of the thing may take longer. This is exemplified by the creation of the earth in 6 days, as mentioned in verse 54 of Surah Al-A'raf in the Quran.

It is worth noting that if Allah wanted something to happen immediately, it would, as the universe is subject to Allah's will, and He has the power to create everything from nothing. Allah has set a process for everything, and everything is bound to obey that process and order. In Surah Al-Fatah, Allah says:

"This is the law of God, effective as before: You will not find any change in the law of God." (Al-Fatah 23)

Significance of Kun Faya Kun in Light of the Quran and Hadith

Kun Faya Kun has been used many times in the Quran, where Allah describes His authority and His power to create anything in no time. In the Quran, Allah uses the term Kun Faya Kun 8 times in different Surah to tell His mankind of His supreme authority and how flawlessly He creates everything with His power. In Surah Al-Imran, Allah describes the situation of Maryam (A.S) when she has to deliver a son without being married. Allah says:

"She (Maryam) said: "How can I have a son, O Lord when no man has touched me?" He said: "That is how God creates what He wills. When He decrees a thing, He says 'Be,' and it is." (Al-Imran 47).

Further, Allah describing the creation of Adam (A.S) added in the same Surah saying;

"For God, the likeness of Jesus is as that of Adam whom He fashioned out of dust and said "Be," and he was." (Al-Imran 59).

Allah uses Kun Faya Kun to describe His power over all other creations. In Surah Al-Anaam Allah says;

"It is He who created the heavens and the earth with a definite purpose. The day He will say "Be," it will be. His words are the truth, His alone the power on the day when the blast of the trumpet will be sounded. He knows the hidden and the visible. He is all-prudent and all-knowing." (Al-Anaam 73).

Describing an occasion in Surah Al-Nahl, Allah says:

"Yet when We will a thing, We have only to say: "Be," and it is." (An-Nahl 40).

On another occasion, Allah tells us about His power to create, and He is clean and pure from anything that belongs only to His creatures. In Surah Maryam, Allah says:

"It does not behoove God to have a son. Too immaculate is He! When He decrees a thing, He has only to say: "Be," and it is. (Maryam 35).

In Surah Yaseen, Allah calls Him the Creator and the Creator of the Heavens and the Earth. Telling about His power, Allah says:

When He wills a thing, He has only to say: "Be," and it is." (Yaseen 82).

Allah is the one who gifted us this life, and He is the One who can call us back. In Surah Ghafir, Allah mentions:

"It is He who gives you life and death. When He creates a thing, He has only to say: "Be," and it is." (Ghafir 68).

We can see from all the verses of the Quran that creating anything, be it a thing or a living creation, is not a big deal for our Lord, and He is the only One with all the might and authority.

Allah creates everything with a Kun. He says Be! And It is. However, Allah further explains in the Quran that he created heaven and the earth in 6 days, which creates a disagreement. However, there is no disagreement. Allah has defined a process for everything. Some processes, like the creation of the universe, take longer. When Allah says Be! The process of the thing starts happening immediately, however the completion may be delayed. This does not mean that Allah does not have the power to make the universe come into existence immediately. He does indeed have this power. However, He chose to create the universe in 6 days, and the reason is best known to him.
