Islam is the third-largest religion in the United States, and Philadelphia is one of the top five Muslim-friendly cities in the US. Philly, lovingly dubbed the Mecca of the west, is home to almost 200,000 Muslims, about 10 – 15% of the total population. Needless to say, practising Muslims in Philadelphia seek a mosque to offer their prayers 5 times a day. However, living in a non-Muslim country can make it hard to find mosques. But that is not the case in Philadelphia because it has more than 40 mosques.
To help our brothers and sisters keep track of their prayer schedules, we've created a list of famous mosques with their prayer times in Philadelphia. These mosques are:
Masjid Al Jamia is a Sunni-sect mosque located in West Philadelphia. Red-bricked and spacious, this mosque is one of Philadelphia's oldest and most famous places of worship. It was built in 1988 by members of the Muslim Student's Association of the University of Pennsylvania. The name Majid Al Jamia means The Congregational Mosque. This name is usually given to the largest mosque in a region where a large number of Muslims can unite for daily prayers as well as special prayers like the Jummah, Eidain, funerals, etc. And, no doubt, this mosque was the largest in the area when it was built in 1988.
Today, it is one of the few mosques that can accommodate about 700 – 1000 people for the Friday Prayer in Philadelphia. Masjid al Jamia offers numerous other services apart from the five daily prayers and the Jummah prayer, including Taraweeh, Eid, and Janazah (funeral) prayers. It also provides Nikkah (Islamic marriage ceremony) services and marriage counselling for Muslim couples. You may also send your children there to learn and memorize the Quran.
Further Contact Details of the mosque and prayer times are given below. However, the prayer times can differ in winter and summer, so we recommend contacting the mosque before visiting.

Al Aqsa Islamic Society is another Sunni-sect mosque in Philadelphia that was established in 1996. The mosque's exterior and interior are designed to reflect Islamic culture and architecture. But, as the name suggests, the Al Aqsa Islamic Society is much more than a regular mosque where you can go for your daily or Jummah prayers. It also doubles as Al Aqsa Islamic Academy, which is a full-time private school in Philly that offers classes from kindergarten to grade 10. The academy aims to provide Muslim children with an Islamic environment where they can learn more about their religion and grow up with Islamic morals.
It aims to enable children to become strong individuals in the community that can face and solve the challenges Muslims commonly face in western societies. Additionally, Al Aqsa Islamic Society offers many other services for the Muslim community, including youth outreach programs, youth clubs, programs for Muslim reverts, Saturday school for children, and more.
