Popular Mosques in Minneapolis

New to the area and confused about prayer times in Minneapolis? This article will highlight some of the best places to offer prayers and connect with the Muslim community! Minnesota is home to a myriad of ethnicities, including Dakota and Ojibwe, Swedes, Hmong, Somalis, and Mexicans. Moreover, while 74% of the population identifies as Christian, the thread of the Minnesotan societal fabric is woven with people from many faiths, including Jews, Buddhists, Hindus, and Muslims.

1% of the total population in Minnesota is Muslim and Minneapolis and St. Paul, usually referred to as the ‘Twin Cities’ in Minnesota, had a population of approximately 182,000 Muslims in 2017. The city also has more than 20 mosques where followers of Islam can offer their daily prayers and remain connected with their faith. So, if you want to offer your prayers in a mosque but don’t know the location, we’ve listed 6 well-known mosques in Minneapolis, Minnesota, where you can complete this obligatory Islamic ritual.

1. Masjid An-Nur

Masjid An-Nur welcomes Muslims of all ethnic and racial groups. Located in North Minneapolis, the mosque is associated with the Muslim American Society and runs under the leadership of Imam W. Deen Mohammed. Masjid An-Nur serves as an all-inclusive Islamic community within the Twin Cities area and provides Islamic education, trains future Islamic leaders, develops and promotes multicultural and interfaith relationships, and transcends stereotypes ad misinformation about Muslims and Islam.

Masjid An-Nur is undergoing renovation to convert it into an Eco-Mosque, the first of its kind in the area, focusing on sustainability and environmental safety. Furthermore, rainstorms and poor drainage are major issues in the North of Minneapolis, so MWMO Stewardship Fund Grants are supporting the construction of rain gardens to counter these issues and improve the mosque’s landscape.

The primary purpose of Masjid An-Nur is to provide a safe space for Muslims of all backgrounds to practice their religion freely. It also promotes health and wellness and aims to create a more engaged and informed Muslim community based on environmental justice.

Founded in 1998 at the heart of the Twin Cities, this non-profit charitable organization is devoted to leading and serving the Muslim community in Minneapolis. Abubakar As-Saddique Islamic Centre currently sits on an area of 95,000 square feet. The initial renovation plan included a prayer hall and second-floor classrooms, which were completed in 2009. Approximately 37,000 square feet of the total space still isn’t utilized despite the urgent requirement of the community to create opportunities for the youth and their families. However, construction of a standard high-school gym, additional classrooms to prevent overcrowding, a K-12 school, and office space are underway to use the available space fully.

Apart from being a place of education and worship, Abubakar As-Saddique Islamic Centre also features a busy shopping center, restaurants that cater to various ethnic groups, and a halal market. 3. Islamic Community of Bosniaks in Minnesota (ICBMN)

Founded in October 2010, the Islamic Community of Bosniaks in Minnesota (ICBMN) was established exclusively for Bosnian Muslims to freely practice and carry out their religious, spiritual, and cultural values and activities. The ICBMN congregation contains about 240 to 300 members and is among the strongest group of religious devotees in North America. After establishment, the first plan of the congregation was to purchase a mosque. By gathering funds, the hard-working members of the ICBMN generated sufficient capital in 2012 to take over a church and convert it into a mosque.

Spread over 6500 square feet, the mosque features a large prayer area with separate ablution areas for men and women. Classrooms for religious studies, a library, a conference room, and a massive hall with a contemporary kitchen for holding meetings. All rooms have video surveillance. Apart from listing prayer times in Minneapolis, the following activities also take place at the ICBMN:

  • Sharia weddings
  • Eid gatherings
  • Zakat and Qurbani payments
  • Lectures by reputable scholars from Bosnia and Herzegovina, such as Mufti Banja Luka Edhem ef. Čamdžić), and from the USA, including the main Imam, Mr. Sabahudin ef. Ceman and Dr. Senad ef. Agić from Chicago.
  • Ramadan lectures

The next plan of the ICBMN is to have a permanent Imam from Bosnia and Herzegovina to lead five-time daily prayers, educate the community about Islam, lead the Tarawih prayer during Ramadan and Eid prayers, organize lectures, officiate Islamic weddings, and more.
