Muslim Association of Hawaii Mosque, Honolulu, HI

The one and only formal mosque in Honolulu is the Muslim Association of Hawaii Mosque. The Muslim Association of Hawaii was established in 1979 as a non-profit organization for the welfare of Muslims in the city. The first act of the organization was to create a mosque so Muslims would have a proper place to offer their prayers in congregations. Previously, Muslims gathered in car packs, shops, or basements to offer salah.

Initially, the mosque was no larger than a cupboard. Later on, with the help of the local Muslim community, the organization purchased a spacious facility for the mosque. The mosque is open daily for obligatory prayers and Jummah prayers. Along with salah, the mosque provides a wide range of services to local Muslims. Firstly, it offers Matrimonial and funeral services. It also hosts Islamic education programs and workshops. These programs have two goals: to educate the Muslim community, remind them of the teachings of Islam through Quran and Sunnah, and keep them connected to the religion. Secondly, they allow non-Muslims interested in Islam to learn what Islam actually is – they promote inter-cultural harmony and even inspire non-Muslims to come towards Islam.

Other than Islamic education, MAH goes above and beyond to support the youth and women in Honolulu. In their youth program, they coach the young generation to be future leaders, and a women-oriented gathering takes place each Saturday to support and empower women.
