As of 2023, the Muslim population of Texas is more than 300,000. It is also considered the largest Muslim community in the Southern United States. There are more than 129 mosques in Texas, each offering various services to their respective communities to cater to the rapidly increasing Muslim population. Katy, Texas, also harbors a thriving Muslim community home to many beautiful mosques. Apart from congregational prayers five times a day, these religious houses serve numerous purposes, such as educating the community about Islam, providing ceremonial services, and organizing religious sermons and charity drives. This article highlights some popular mosques and their prayer times in Katy, Texas.
Founded in 2001, Masjid Aqsa, also called Katy Islamic Center (KIC), is a 501(c)non-profit organization in Katy, Texas, run by the Islamic Society of Greater Houston. KIC serves the local community and also welcomes guests from all over Houston. Masjid Aqsa was established to serve as an autonomous Islamic center. It aimed to build and maintain a robust Muslim community and empower individuals educationally, spiritually, and socially according to the teachings of the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ).
Masjid Aqsa holds five-time congregational prayers as well as Friday prayer services. Besides being a thriving religious institution, the mosque offers educational services, including a Weekend Islamic School, Weekday Quran Classes, and Nazra Quran classes for children. Moreover, the center offers various Halaqas and other programs that provide religious guidance and counseling for the general community. The weekly and monthly schedules for all lectures and programs are updated daily on the center's website, and different methods of giving donations are also displayed.
Masjid Al-Ahad was founded in 2008 and has served Katy's Muslim community for almost 15 years. The mosque is currently running inside a small, rented place in Katy, but with donations from the community as well as support from the generous people of Houston, plans to build a larger, permanent Masjid with a cultural center are underway. Masjid Al-Ahad aims to preach Islam to Muslims and non-Muslims and equip them with the knowledge they require to overcome the difficulties of modern society. The mosque also focuses on Da'wah activities and provides authentic information about Islam to all communities.
Masjid Al-Ahad also holds programs where the core concepts of the Quran and Hadith are taught to brothers, sisters, and the young generation. Quran memorization and recitation programs are also conducted for children and adults. The services provided by the mosque include Nikah, family counseling, Tarawih and Etikaaf (during Ramadan), Eid prayers, and Funerals. Last but not least, Masjid Al-Ahad also organizes sports activities for youngsters to inspire social interactions among individuals in the community.
Founded in 2006, the thriving Muslim American Society (MAS) Katy Center serves as a mosque and a community center for the Muslims of Katy and Houston. It was established to meet the various religious, social, and educational needs of the Muslim community. Masjid Ar-Rahman strives to present authentic and well-balanced information about Islam and Muslims to all community members, regardless of their faiths and affiliations. Moreover, the mosque organizes various activities for the youth, such as scouting programs, personal development programs, and sporting events.
MAS harbors a close relationship with the Houston Quran Academy and many civic and interfaith organizations. Non-Muslims are always welcome and can partake in religious and educational sermons in an effort to build stronger communities across Katy and the United Nations. The West Katy Islamic Center (WKIC) and mosque is a relatively new religious center in Katy that provides educational, religious, social, and charitable programs for the Muslim community. WKIC believes in propagating Islam, promoting religious learning, and indulging in community service. Since the number of community members visiting the mosque is close to 150, WKIC is working to obtain a large space, after which they will also begin to offer weekly Friday prayers. Currently, the mosque holds five-time congregational prayers and Tarawih prayers during Ramadan. Furthermore, WKIC plans to organize Quranic learning classes for children on weekdays and monthly lectures for the entire community. Inter-faith events and visits to the mosque from individuals of other faiths are also on the agenda.
Located 27 minutes from Katy in Sugar Land is the beautifully constructed Masjid At-Taqwa. Besides congregational prayers, the mosque offers many programs and services for its community, including weekly Quran classes, counseling services, marriage services, Zakat distribution, and funeral services. Besides religious and social services, Masjid At-Taqwa also provides medical services under the Houston Shifa Services Foundation non-profit organization.
Operating since 1998, the Shifa Clinic at the mosque offers affordable medical treatment for everyone, irrespective of religion; family, pediatric, dental, and ophthalmic (eye) care is available. The medical staff is clinically trained and operates under a strict medical review board; volunteers are welcome to help. Masjid At-Taqwa also holds programs for non-Muslims, including the Da'wah program for boys ages 6 and above; snacks and sports such as basketball and ping pong are also included.
