The Islamic Circle of North America (ICNA) has different chapters across the U.S. and was initiated in Virginia in the 1970s. It started as a Quran study circle in the houses of a few friends and family, where they educated each other and learned about the religion in an Islamic environment every week. At that time, there wasn't a single place in Alexandria for Muslims to offer congregational prayers, and this group rented a house to conduct five daily prayers and Jumm'ah sermons. Soon, by the grace of Allah, they purchased a facility to establish the ICNA mosque.
Membership at ICNA is entirely free, and it works as a charitable organization. There are several outreach programs, da'wah activities, social services, Eid and other religious events, Friday prayers, an open-house program, a Zakat committee, and relief work. One of the essential programs of this mosque is its Islamic School. The fee of this weekend school is $90 to $190, and it has a staff of three female and three male teachers who offer beginners, intermediate and advanced level religious education.
Other classes held in Masjid after Maghrib prayers are Hadeeth classes, Sisters Tajweed Class, a class for Hadith Book Study: "Riyaadus-Sualiheen," Tafseer classes by Shaykh Ahmed Nazir and Brothers Tajweed Class. All these classes are arranged during the week, and on Sunday, there is a Q&A session for the Muslims to ask questions from the Imam and learn about their religion. Other services include youth programs, counseling for marriage and divorce, matrimonial and funeral services, etc.
